Abstract

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative and granulomatous disease caused by actinomyces species especially A. israelii. It is a relative infrequent disease and often difficult to diagnose because of no reliable clinical and radiologic findings. It is usually considered as a colon cancer, periappendiceal abscess, chronic appendicitis or intestinal tuberculosis. The diagnosis is usually made during exploratory laparotomy by staining of characteristic sulfur granules from surgically resected specimen and culture of actinomyces israelii. Treatment consists of long-term antibiotic therapy and surgical resection of infected lesion with antibiotic therapy. We report a case of abdominal actinomycosis, preoperatively impressed as a cecal cancer, which was diagnosed by histological study of the operative specimen.
